A Simulation Model for Jakarta Flood Evacuation

The RESilient Emergency Preparedness for Natural Disaster Response via Operational Research (RESPOND-OR) research project, led by Lancaster University’s Centre for Transport and Logistics (CENTRAL), aims to solve challenges and improve natural disaster emergency preparedness and response. The RESPOND-OR project will provide a Decision Support System to help with decisions such as: I disaster relief supply allocation and distribution, ii) population evacuation, and iii) emergency response personnel scheduling and routing. The project, which is funded by the UKRI Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council’s Global Challenge Research Fund (EPSRC/GCRF) program*, brings together a multinational, interdisciplinary research team from the United Kingdom (Lancaster University), Indonesia (Universitas Gadjah Mada and Universitas Indonesia), and Sudan (Universitas Indonesia) (University of Khartoum). The research team is collaborating closely with important stakeholders from both Indonesia and Sudan who represent disaster management organizations. The National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB), the Yogyakarta Special Region Disaster Management Agency (BPBD DIY), and the Humanitarian Forum Indonesia are the primary stakeholders in Indonesia (HFI). The goal is to make sure that the project deliverables are in line with the needs of the stakeholders.

The UGM team, which includes Bertha Maya Sopha, Ph.D., Hilya Mudrika Arini, Ph.D., and Sekar Sakti, M.Sc., is working on a simulation model to predict the evacuation time and number of evacuated residents (both aided and self-evacuated) for flood evacuation in Jakarta. Between October 2020 and March 2021, empirical data was collected and a conceptual model was developed. The initial iteration of simulation, which will be released in April 2021, will integrate agent-based modeling and discrete-event simulation. It replicates the evacuation of residents from their homes. Trucks and rubber boats are used to simulate actual response actions throughout the evacuation procedure. In June 2021, the initial simulation model was presented to BPNB and NGOs at a verification workshop. The simulation model can be used as an experimental tool to help better create a flood evacuation plan for Jakarta.

Graduation 84 Bachelor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department, FT UGM

On Wednesday, August 25, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) presented an online graduation for Bachelor and Diploma Programs.

84 Bachelors of Engineering were graduated at DTMI’s Bachelor Program graduation ceremony for the August Period of the 2020/2021 Academic Year, with 34 Bachelors of Mechanical Engineering and 50 Bachelors of Industrial Engineering. Following that, four graduates (Achmad Fajar Wibawa, Hanif Bayu Ismail, Zein Nurrahman, and Cahya Dika Wicaksana) completed the Mechanical Engineering Bachelor Program in the quickest time possible (three years, ten months, and eleven days). 8 alumni completed the Industrial Engineering Bachelor Program in the shortest time possible.(Aryaputra Palguna, Taajkhansa Najla, OchtaTio Feny Pasaribu, Trusti Hapsari, Desti Pinasti Putri, Devita Ayuni Kusumaningsih, Muhammad Fernanda Lutfiansyah, Sarah Khairita Putri) With a study duration of 3 years 9 months 11 days.

Ananda Thalia Nurul Akbar (20 years 11 months) is the youngest Mechanical Engineering graduate, while Sally Justiani is the youngest Bachelor of Industrial Engineering graduate (20 years 10 months)

Next, Muhammad Adimas Daffa Mukaarim (3.82) earned the highest GPA in the Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Study Program, while Rayhan Kenandi Eka Putra (3.92) and Adinda Mutiara Santi (3.92) earned the highest GPA in the Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Study Program (3.92)

Master of Mechanical Engineering Student Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Study Exchange with Ehime University, Japan

The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) collaborated with Ehime University from Japan to collaborate in student exchange where on this occasion UGM students left for the land of cherry blossoms on October 23 – November 19, 2019. Three master students of Mechanical Engineering DTMI FT UGM namely Wiliandi Saputro (Wili), Fatkhurrohman (Fatkhur) and M. Aisya Fatima Sampurno (Aisya) represented the Mechanical Engineering study program to study for one month there. After arriving in Japan, Wili and Fatkhur were placed in the Department of Mechanical Engineering or Kikai Koogaku in Japanese, and Aisya herself was placed in Materials and Science Engineering (Kinoozairyoo Koogaku).

Wili had the opportunity to study and conduct research on “Preparation of composite materials of Na-1 Zeolite for Cs Decontamination”, namely studying the synthesis of zeolite for decontamination of soil contaminated by the Fukushima nuclear explosion. Research conducted by Fatkhur focused on internal fracture (damage) and crack propagation of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), wherein the manufacture of CFRP lamina a sensor is placed in the form of FBG (fiber bragg grating) which is applied to the fuselage. Aisya herself is in a different department, focusing on synthesizing and characterizing silicon carbide using the microwave heating method for various applications in machinery such as turbine engines, boilers, and other refractory applications.

Fatkhur explained that this exchange activity was not only focused on research, but was also filled with non-academic learning such as the Matsuyama city tour, visiting the historical place of Matsuyama Castle, and industrial visits to agricultural machinery companies. “One month is short, but this short time can be maximized to support all the services there, we are facilitated with a library card so that we can freely study and borrow books, and a student card is also facilitated so that we can use the facilities to the fullest. Not only that, but we also use our days off to study non-academic things with Japanese friends, or to visits other Indonesian students to exchange ideas and experiences. I learned a lot there,” said Aisya, Tuesday (17/12/2019). Wili also added that the students welcomed him warmly and enthusiastically, “They cooked special meals for us, and prepared all the events perfectly, we felt like we are welcomed as a new family even though we haven’t known them for long”. Wili, Fatkhur and Aisya hope that their fellow master students of Mechanical Engineering DTMI FT UGM can take part in this activity in the following years. This activity is very useful to learn about the latest technology in a developed country and to research and develop it in Indonesia in an effort to increase scientific progress, develop the potential to continue doctoral studies, introduce Indonesian culture in the Culture Sharing Program, as well as to establish good relations and cooperation in the field of research with universities that already advanced.

New research project to tackle emergency natural disaster response problems

 

A new research project aims to tackle problems and improve natural disaster emergency preparedness and response in countries badly affected by earthquakes, flooding, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis.

 

The RESilient Emergency Preparedness for Natural Disaster Response through Operational Research (RESPOND-OR) project will look at ways of improving existing systems, identify current challenges, and develop methods to overcome them.

 

Researchers from Centre for Transport and Logistics Lancaster University Management School (LUMS) will lead the work, in conjunction with a multinational, interdisciplinary research team from Indonesia and Sudan, including researchers from Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Gadjah Mada and University of Khartoum.

 

The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) has provided more than half-a-million pounds from the Global Challenges Research Fund for the £600,000 two-year project, which will start in October.

 

RESPOND-OR will investigate the issues relating to emergency response management of large-scale natural disasters in Indonesia and Sudan. The focus will be on optimising disaster preparedness and response, looking across strategic, tactical and operations decisions, developing fast and efficient algorithms that account for the fast response time needed and the need to deal with data from across many different organisations.

 

Principal Investigator Konstantinos Zografos, Director of CENTRAL and Distinguished Professor of Management Science in LUMS, said: “Indonesia and Sudan are among the countries affected by the economic and societal consequences of natural disasters. Indonesia is a country where one natural disaster can trigger another – an earthquake leading to a tsunami, for instance – while Sudan suffers from flooding which can cause a health emergency that needs simultaneous consideration.

 

“The optimisation of disaster preparedness and response interventions provides great potential to decrease the magnitude of the negative impacts of disasters, with significant economic and societal benefits for the affected communities. Our research is motivated by this desire, and the mathematical models and solution methods will be transferable to similar problems in other developing and developed countries.”

 

Challenges already identified include building a system for allocating disaster response resources in the event of combined natural disasters; integrating systems from different bodies and organisations; distributing disaster relief in the presence of civil disobedience and social conflict; evacuation of affected populations; and ensuring fairness into preparedness and response decisions.

 

Professor Zografos, who will work alongside Professor Juliana Sutanto, Professor Kevin Glazebrook, and Dr Ahmed Kheiri on the project at LUMS, added: “There is an urgent need to address the identified challenges. The RESPOND-OR project will develop the next generation of cutting-edge mathematical models and solution algorithms which will incorporate real world complexities and the requirements of all the stakeholders.

 

“This will have a significant economic and social impact by enabling more efficient and effective allocation and use of the available disaster preparedness and response resources in communities across disaster-prone areas.”

 

The research team will be working with key stakeholders representing disaster management organisations in both Sudan and Indonesia: Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Authority (BNPB); Disaster Management Agency of the Yogyakarta Special Region (BPBD DIY); Humanitarian Forum Indonesia (HFI); RedR Indonesia; and Nile Basin Institute (NBI). The aim is to develop a sustainable international partnership between academics and those organisations – including governments.

 

Professors Zografos and Sutanto, together with fellow LUMS Professor Adam Letchford, will also work with the University of Kent and the University of Southampton on a parallel capacity building project, CREST-OR), again funded by the EPSRC.

Journal of Materials Processing and Characterization (JMPC) is an international, open-access and peer-reviewed journal aimed to facilitate researchers in disseminating their research works in the field of processing and characterization of engineering materials as well as biomaterials for biomedical applications. The journal is published jointly by Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) and Centre for Innovation of Medical Equipment and Devices (CIMEDs) UGM.

In general, JMPC covers all the research topics related to the processing (such as material preparations, fabrication techniques, post-processing treatments) and characterizations (such as novel methods for characterization, experimental testing and numerical analyses) of metals, polymers, ceramics and composites. To be more specific, the journal covers the following research topics:

  1. Processing technologies of engineering materials and biomaterials, including casting, solidification, forming, forging, hot and cold-working, machining, powder metallurgy, extrusion, heat treatments, additive manufacturing, welding, and injection moulding.
  2. Surface treatments of engineering materials and biomaterials, including coatings, shot and grit blasting, anodization, physical and chemical treatments.
  3. Characterizations of engineering materials and biomaterials, including microstructural analysis, surface characterizations, mechanical testing, electrochemical characterization and tribological testing.
  4. Failures of engineering materials and biomaterials, including fractures, fatigue, corrosion and wear.

The MEET-nConf 2019 objectives are bringing together researchers, scientists, academics, students, policy makers, practitioners, private companies and professionals to exchange information and identify research needs in the areas of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. In this annual conference, we seek to expand the scope to a wider community of researchers allowing a higher quality of knowledge transfer and communication. Pada Selasa, 2 Juli 2019 telah dilakukan Launching “Posbindu” sebagai fasilitas layanan kesehatan baru di Departemen Teknik Mesin dan Industri FT UGM. Sebagai fasilitas baru, layanan ini mencakup pemeriksaan kesehatan umum, mini klinik, dan konsultasi yang terbuka bagi seluruh warga masyarakat di lingkup DTMI FT UGM.

Pada acara launching tersebut, diadakan Pemeriksaan Kesehatan Gratis bagi seluruh Dosen dan Tenaga Pendidik di lingkungan Departemen Teknik Mesin dan Industri FT UGM. Pemeriksaan tersebut meliputi Pemeriksaan Fisik (berat badan, tinggi badan), tekanan darah, cek darah (gula darah, kolestrol, dan asam urat), serta konsultasi kesehatan. Acara ini cukup antusias diikuti oleh civitas akademika DTMI FT UGM.

Dalam sambutannya, Sekretaris Departemen, Dr. Fauzun berharap agar keberadaan Posbindu ini dapat dimanfaatkan secara optimal serta mendukung kinerja Dosen, Tendik, maupun Mahasiswa dalam proses belajar-mengajar sehari-hari. On 28th September 2018, a community development group of Industrial Engineering lecturers, leaded by Ir. Alva Edy Tontowi, M.Sc., Ph.D. established “Angkringan CODE” as an example program of small-scale and medium enterprise development around Universitas Gadjah Mada.

Here, a small-scale restaurant sells food and beverage in a low price for the students and people around Faculty of Engineering UGM. The soft launching was held at area near the Product Design Laboratory, Building D of DTMI UGM. Some lecturers, students, and staffs attended the ceremony. Good luck! Be the fountain in the middle of the oasis.

GADJAH MADA ROBOTIC TEAM GOES TO AMERICA

Gadjah Mada Robotic Team (GMRT) had the opportunity to attend Trinity College International Robotic Contest at Trinity College, Hartford, United States. As the overall champion of the Indonesian Robot Contest in 2017, GMRT gets a gift from the Minister of Research and Technology to attend the annual international robot competition which will take place at Trinity College. GMRT itself will dispatch 1 team consisting of 1 mechanic (Dani Setyawan, Mechanical Engineering 2015), 1 electronics and team leader KRPAI (Atin Yudi Wibowo, Department of Electrical Engineering 2015) and 2 progammer (Adien Gumilang, Electrical Engineering 2015 and Habib Astari Adi , Elins 2015). This team will compete in the Walking (General) category which will take place on April 6 to April 8 2018.

Gadjah Mada Robotic Team has prepared the robot since 6 months ago. It was this long preparation that made GMRT set a high target in this competition. "For the target, we are installing high. If possible, the champion is 1. In addition, we also target the Grand Performance Mastery Prize (GPMP), which is the highest award for robots with the lowest scores from Junior, High School, to Walking (general) levels. In the assessment the smallest team will win. "- Dani Setyawan (Mechanical Engineering 2015).

Gadjah Mada Robotic Team will depart for the United States on Wednesday night (04-04-2018).
