Apart from courses covering the fundamental concepts and critical thinking skills in classroom, students are encouraged to be engaged in student organizations beyond the classroom.  The Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has two Undergraduate Students Organizations, namely :

(1)   Keluarga Mahasiswa Teknik Mesin (KMTM) or Mechanical Engineering Student Union.

(2) Himpunan Mahasiswa Teknik Industri (HMTI) or Industrial Engineering Student Union.

The student organizations enable undergraduate students to become active in their communities. In addition, the student organizations are intended to foster student’s creativity, engineering practice, leadership, and teamwork that will support their careers in the future.

A. MECHANICAL ENGINEERING STUDENT UNION

Mechanical Engineering Student Union (KMTM) has four excellent Student Teams as follows:

1. Bimasakti Student Formula SAE

Bimasakti is the Department of Mechanical Engineering’s Student Formula SAE team devoted to providing experiences for undergraduate students in research and car design. Formula SAE is a collegiate motorsport racing series in which students use technological innovation and advanced engineering analysis to build formula-style race cars. Every year, Bimsakti Formula SAE team participates in Student Formula SAE Competition of Japan held in Shizuoka, Japan. By joining this competition, students have experiences in engineering design and teamwork which are important for their career in industries.  

2. GAMAFORCE – Gadjah Mada Flying Object Research Center

Gama Force is the unmanned aerial vehicle (UHV) team at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM). The Gama Force has members from various fields of study with the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering as the team leader. The Gama Force UAV is aimed to give undergraduate students experiences in aerodynamics research, aircraft design and control. 

3. Semar Shell Eco-Marathon

Semar is the Department of Mechanical Engineering’s Shell Eco-marathon team. Shell Eco-Marathon is an annual competition sponsored by Shell that challenges students around the world to design, build and drive the most energy-efficient car. Semar Team has participated in Shell Eco-marathon Competition in Asia (Singapore) since 2007.

4. Arjuna Electric Vehicle

Arjuna is the electric vehicle team at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) which involves some departments including the Department of Mechanical and Engineering, the Department of Electrical Engineering, the Department of Chemical Engineering, and the Department of Physics. The Arjuna Electric Vehicle is aimed to give undergraduate students experiences in car design, research in battery, and control. Arjuna team can support The Goverment Policy to develop environmentally-friendly electric cars.

B. INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING STUDENT UNION

HMTI UGM was founded around June 2000. HMTI UGM was originally a Semi-Autonomous Body (BSO) under the UGM Mechanical Engineering Student Family (KMTM). Until 2003, HMTI had an equal position with KMTM as a student association. HMTI has 9 departments, namely the 

1. Badan Pengurus Harian (BPH), 
2. Departemen Pengembangan Sumber Daya Manusia (PSDM), 
3. Departemen Media dan Informasi (MEDINFO), 
4. Departemen Hubungan Antar Lembaga (HAL), 
5. Departemen Wigrha Organisasi (WO), 
6. Departemen Pengembangan Wawasan dan Keilmuan (PWK), 
7. Departemen Minat dan Bakat (MIKAT),
8. Departemen Kewirausahaan (KWU), and
9. Departemen Kemasyarakatan (KMS).
